Hub of the community

The Lasswade Centre in Midlothian is both an exceptional secondary school and a hub for the local community. This superb state-of-the-art learning environment is linked to exceptional community facilities, all within a light and open building.

Designed to inspire and benefit all who use it, Lasswade was recognised with the accolade of “Community Partnership of the Year” at the Scottish Property Awards.

The Brief

The Lasswade Centre was the first exemplar secondary school to be built as part of Scottish Futures Trust (SFT) Schools for the Future programme. Working with Scottish Futures Trust and Midlothian Council, our task was to deliver two separate, but equally inspiring, environments in one beautiful modern building.

With our understanding of educational needs, and our experience across a wide variety of learning environments, we were perfectly placed to handle the challenging task of fusing community and educational facilities in the same development.

The Design

Designed for a complement of 1,500 pupils, you arrive at The Lasswade Centre to be greeted by a large bright entrance hall which combines a reception, café, library and crèche.

This hall acts as a hinge between the school, which is based on a learning hub and sees the school’s teaching spaces wrapped around a large, bright central atrium, and the community hub, which is home to two sports halls, a 25m pool, dance studios, offices and a Gymnasium Academy, among other things.

With colour used throughout the building to guide pupils and visitors to different zones, the whole building has an uplifting, vibrant and inviting atmosphere.

Arrow Left Arrow Right

The new Lasswade High School Centre is shaping up to be a fantastic school and community hub. this new £37.1m eye-catching building is sure to be a real asset to both pupils and the general public at large.

Awards

We don’t design for awards; we design for people. But once in a while, it’s nice to take stock of external measures of success.
