Setting new standards

Number One Kirkstall Forge is a commercial office development within one of the most inspiring regeneration projects in the UK in recent years. Kirkstall Forge in Leeds is a new development on a former industrial site which will be transformed into a thriving mixed-use community in a stunning woodland and riverside setting.

As the first phase of commercial development, Number One, has set new standards in commercial office design and wellbeing and was awarded by the British Council of Offices the national award Best Commercial Workplace in the UK in 2018.

The Brief

We were challenged by CEG to deliver a city centre quality building in a rural location and to achieve the highest quality of workspace and specification that would embrace and maximise the space, light and greenery offered by this truly inspiring and historic site.

The Design

The BCO National Judging panel praised the way that “Number One had met its demanding expectations by intertwining placemaking, industrial heritage, cultural values and quality, always with the principles of workplace at the core of the decision making process.”

The striking architecture has created a fine landmark for this historic site and the building design aesthetic which utilises dark colour expressed anodised frames, references the rich industrial heritage of Kirkstall Forge in a highly contemporary manner.

Number One has achieved exemplary environmental credentials and the project features a site wide transport plan, new bus and rail services, enhanced footpath and cycleway connectivity, car sharing, cycle and scooter hire. Number One is an innovative and striking workspace with an emphasis on wellbeing that not only works for people as well as the environment, but also promotes sustainable travel.
